Recent research suggests that exposure to blue light before going to sleep can distort your natural (circadian) rhythm and make you unable to fall asleep. The reason is the photoreceptor in the eye, called melanopsin. This receptor is sensitive to a narrow band of blue light in the 460-480 nm range that can suppress the production of the hormone melatonin, which is responsible for your healthy sleep-wake cycle. Experimental scientific studies have shown that an average person can delay your sleep in about an hour by falling on a tablet or smartphone for a few hours before going to sleep. See references below. The Twilight app adapts the screen of your device to the day. It filters out the blue light stream your phone or tablet emits after sunset and protects your eyes with a great soft red filter. The intensity of the filter adjusts smoothly with the solar cycle based on local sunrise and sunset times.
